Hayes continued to release successful albums throughout the 1970s, including "Shaft," which was the soundtrack for the 1971 film of the same name. The album won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score, and the title track became a chart-topping hit. Hayes also had a successful career as a songwriter, penning hits such as "Soul Man" for Sam and Dave and "Hold On, I'm Coming." In the late 1970s, NASA created a disco-themed version of its official mission theme for the Space Shuttle program. The song, called "The Shuttle Shuffle," was intended to be a catchy and upbeat way to promote the new Space Shuttle program and get people excited about space exploration.
