Im Oktober 1960 schuf John Coltrane während produktiver Sessions für sein Album “My Favorite Things” beim Label Atlantic genug Material für gleich drei Alben. Eins davon ist das 1961 erschienene “Coltrane Plays the Blues”, auf dem der Jazzer erstmals Sopran-Saxophon spielt. Zu hören sind außerdem McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis und Elvin Jones, die unter anderem “Blues to Bechet”, “Blues to Elvin” und “Blues to You” einspielen.
